Description
Community owned Co-operatives in the Arctic are multi-purpose businesses that provide a wide range of services to their members and their communities. Services provided by local Co-ops include retail stores, hotel and tourism operations, cable television, arts and craft marketing, fuel distribution, construction & heavy equipment services, property rental and a variety of agency type services. Kugluktuk Co-operative, formerly known as the Coppermine Eskimo Co-op, operates a retail store, fuel delivery services and supplies cable TV services to the community. Kugluktuk “Quluktuk” means “the place of moving water”. The community has a population of 1,450 and is the westernmost community in Nunavut, almost on the border of the Northwest Territories. The Inuit of this area are known as the Copper Inuit, a name born of the nearby Copper Mountains. Hunters still spend much time hunting and fishing. By spending so much time on the land, Inuit of Kugluktuk ensure their traditional skills are passed on to younger generations, whether it be sewing fur clothing, hunting wild game, carving soapstone, preparing traditional food, drum dancing, or enjoying good old-time fiddling.
