Artist-Run Centres (ARCs) are galleries and/or production centres established and managed by artists. Most centres follow the not-for-profit model, do not charge admission fees, pay artists fees for their contributions and de-emphasize sales. ARCs present contemporary art by Canadian and international artists (visual and media arts, performance art, publishing, contemporary craft and architecture). Exhibitions are often accompanied by critical writing and publishing—in combination with lectures, performances, screenings, etc. There are currently over 190 artist-run centres and collectives in cities and towns across Canada. Each ARC has its own mandate and cultural identity, providing unique and significant artistic benefits to each community.

THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE ARTS CENTRE
122 Fern Road West, Qualicum Beach, BC V9K 1T2
Art & Cultural Centres nurture and celebrate community, creativity, and culture. These mixed-use facilities often house art galleries or exhibition spaces, performance centres, assembly halls, arts-focused classrooms/studios, and meeting rooms. They operate year-round and offer countless arts-based programs and initiatives.
Artists' Cooperatives are collectives of artists who pool their resources to meet common economic, social and/or cultural needs. This is often done through jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprises. These enterprises may be for profit or non-profit—including, for example, the sharing of studio spaces with retail operations. That said, many artists maintain their own studios, some of which are open to the public. Those with business hours (which may include calling in advance to make an appointment) are noted here.

Canadian art dealers represent the country’s leading artists and deal in works of all periods and media. They also promote and sell works by renown international artists. The generic term "Canadian art" refers to the visual arts (including painting, photography and printmaking) as well as plastic arts (such as sculpture and other three-dimensional works) originating from within the geographical boundaries of Canada. Art in Canada also represents a dialogue with Indigenous peoples and how best to document and spotlight their creative practices. Individual art dealers often congregate in gallery "districts" within larger cities and regions—creative hubs that are often walking distance from public galleries, museums and artist-run centres.
A wide variety of commercial and not-for-profit activities and enterprises support and promote art, artists, art discourse, and public engagement and enjoyment of art outside of traditional “art” institutions and venues.
ART VANCOUVER: INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR
Vancouver Convention Centre, 1055 Canada Place, Vancouver, BC V6C 0C3
Art Fairs and Festivals take place in cities and towns across the country—in exhibition halls and community spaces that are often attended by thousands of people. Many of them are uniquely Canadian events that showcase artists, galleries, artists' projects and so much more! These fairs and festivals are often thematic, media-based events that take place in a diversity of spaces and places—indoors, outdoors, and at all times of year: day/night and even all-night events.
Art Foundations & Collections are privately funded institutions established by individuals, collectors, artists or companies that are committed to presenting contemporary culture—art, design, architecture, performance and more. These institutions often maintain purpose-built galleries or museums that house and showcase their unique private or corporate art collections. They are non-profit organizations that maintain, present, and develop their collections, and often further public knowledge and appreciation of unique bodies of work and of the visual arts at large. They also often support this work through educational programmes (workshops, conferences, lectures), artist residencies, and granting divisions.
